Another great review for Cafe Oophaga

June 8th, 2010

Thank you Charlene H for putting this great review on Yelp – and some photos too!

“17/5/2010

This is an absolutely wonderful café to find. It is quite well hidden, and the best way to describe where it is, is by saying that its behind the Colston Hall, up from where the o2 academy is. Once youre on that road, you will not miss its colourful sign; a little frog beckoning you to come inside.

The atmosphere here is so lovely, it is somewhere you could spend your time drinking coffee and having a nice little relax. Speaking of which; the coffees here are excellent, and after conversation with Alex (the owner) I completely sense his passion for great, properly well made coffees. A drink here that is not to be missed, is the hot chocolate. Bog standard chocolate powder mixed with hot milk? No! Not here. Alex makes his own chocolate syrup, from Venezuelan Black 100% cacao. It is truly a rare find!

There is paninis, baguettes, sandwiches, soups and salads on offer, all made to be really fresh and healthy. And after your meal, I would highly suggest having a slice of cake! The beetroot cake was awesome.

This café has only opened a few months back, and it is most definitely worth a visit. A great relaxed spot to get away from the hustle and bustle of the center.”

Bristol Culture reviews Cafe Oophaga and likes it!

June 5th, 2010

“Do you know what the origins of the coffee plant are? According to a handwritten story on one of the walls in Cafe Oophaga, it involves a goat herd named Koldi and a monk together in the highlands of Abyssinia. So now you know.

One more question should also be asked for those unfamiliar with Cafe Oophaga, hidden behind the Colston Hall on Trenchard Street at the bottom of the steep Lodge Street leading down from Park Row. Why Oophaga? For those of us who don’t work in the BBC Natural History Unit, an oophaga is a genus of poison dart frog, notable in the amphibean world for exhibiting a high degree of parental care.

In Cafe Oophaga, a hint of the meaning behind the cafe’s name are the bright orange frogs on the painted sign above the door and a small model of the frog inside. That model of the frog is not the only interesting thing inside the cafe, which is full of nice quirky touches. There are old bar stools and a church pew, an old-fashioned clock, and vinyl record sleeves decorating one of the orange and cream walls. There is also one mystery wood and metal item that owner Alex found earlier this year in a charity shop. Suggest an idea that he likes and get a half-price coffee. Prove what it is and get a coffee for free.

The cafe is a registred BookCrossing zone, which can see people come in and swap books with BookCrossing. There is also wi-fi, for those who prefer laptops to books.

For a small cafe, there is a lot squeezed into Cafe Oophaga, which itself is squeezed into a corner building with a view of the back of the Colston Hall. There is no shiny new gold foyer at this end of the building.

Out of Cafe Oophaga’s small kitchen, the owners hope to work with the seasons, with the upcoming summer hopefully seeing fresh fruit and vegetable smoothies, gazpacho soup, iced coffees and crisp salads. When I visited on Friday afternoon last week, the soup of the day was yellow split pea, carrot and cumin. There was also a small selection of pastries and cakes.

Cafe Oophaga is a fun place, and worth a detour to find for some more fascinating facts, curious objects and good coffee.”

Soup of the day is Tuscan Bean…

Well our version of it, including 10 different beans in a herby tomato base. Very tasty and filling!

What is the Mystery Object? Competition at Cafe Oophaga

May 6th, 2010

Earlier this year Alex found this mystery object in a charity shop.

It is a very lovely mystery object made of wood and metal, not very heavy, you can pick it up in one hand.

You can go and look at it in Cafe Oophaga and see what you think it is, then – either post a comment here telling us what you think it is, or leave a note next to it at Cafe Oophaga.

If we like your idea you can have your coffee for HALF PRICE! If you can proove that you know what it is and are not making it up then you get a FREE COFFEE!

Now, what could it be?

Love at Cafe Oophaga?

April 29th, 2010

Is love brewing as well as fantastic coffee at Cafe Oophaga?

On the 20th April 2010 in the Venue “I saw you” column this appeared – “I saw you at Cafe Oophaga hop hop little froggy”. Who is the little froggy? Does someone like your dancing little froggy or does someone want you to hop it? Ooooohhh, I love a mystery! Enlighten us someone :-)

Another great review for Cafe Oooooooooooooooophaga!

April 27th, 2010

“A little hidden cafe, that you would do quite well to find. ‘Cafe Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooophaga’ is not the biggest place, nor is it the most popular venue, but what it does have is that friendly feeling and vibe that turns a good coffee into a great one!

One of the few places that I will actually sit down and enjoy my food and drink rather than just getting a takeaway. You feel like your far away from anything that could possibly trouble you, you reach a level of excapism… sounds silly? Don’t believe me then, but go check it out for yourself!”
